Digestion and Crohns

Digestive Disorders: Crohn's Disease

Crohn's Disease is a chronic inflammatory disease at the lower end of small intestine or the start of the large intestine can also be involved.

The most common symptoms are intermittent attacks of diarrhoea, abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, and weight loss.

Some patients can have a blockage or ulcer in the adjacent area via fistulas (abnormal connection between two organs or vessels that normally do not connect). There are also some patients who experience skin rashes, arthritis, and inflammation of the eyes. In severe cases there can also be bleeding of the bowel. The real cause of Crohn's disease has not been identified yet. But it has been found it could be related to infection by a virus or bacteria, food poisoning, or emotional stress.

Here at Harmony Chinese Medical Centre we will focus very closely within the body's physical structure as well as the internal organs. Detailed consultation will first take place to gather information about the patient in helping us to put the puzzle together examining the body as a whole. Digestive Disorders: Constipation

Everyone of us has experienced constipation, and while this maybe temporary for some it can be a permanent problem for others. Constipation can include, difficulties in defecating, hard /dry stool, irregular bowel motions, some may also be accompanied by painful movements and a burning/tender sensation in the anus whilst defecating. People that suffer from constipation may also experience mood swings, bloating of the abdomen, thirst, headache and pain in the abdomen.

Chinese medicine has long dealt with constipation and it has been one of the most common topics in the Traditional Chinese Medicine texts. With Chinese medicine, we will look at the body as a whole and not just focusing at the large intestine itself.

There are many causes of constipation according to Chinese Medicine, some of these are often over looked by conventional medicine. It is not as simple as using laxatives or purgatives to treat the condition as a very detailed consultation will reveal the complexity of each individual's cause.

When there is a blockage it simply means that there is an imbalance somewhere in the system leading to constipation.

Here at Harmony Chinese medical Centre we will give a very detailed consultation in evaluating the cause of the problem, focusing within the body's physical structural as well as the internal organs. Once the cause is found treatments are likely to include Chinese Herbal Medicine and acupuncture which are carried out by our highly trained doctors in the most gentle and professional way. Followed by a modification in the person's diet and different food recommendations to our patients.

Digestive Disorders: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS is a disorder that leads to abdominal pain and cramping, changes in bowel movements such as loose stools or constipation, and other symptoms such as bloating or constantly feeling full or discomfort in the abdomen.

IBS sometimes can occurs after an infection of the intestines and there may also be other triggers, such as lifestyle, diet and emotions.

In the case of stress, the intestine is connected to the brain. Signals go back and forth between the bowel and brain. These signals affect bowel function and symptoms. The nerves can become more active during stress, causing the intestines to be more sensitive and contract more. IBS can occur at any age, but it often begins in the teen years or early adulthood. It is twice as common in women as in men. Most people have mild symptoms. Symptoms are different from person to person.

The main symptoms of IBS are abdominal pain, fullness, gas, and bloating that have been present for at least 3 days a month for the last 3 months. The pain and other symptoms will often be reduced or go away after a bowel movement, and may reoccur when there is a change in how often you have bowel movements.

People with IBS may switch between constipation and diarrhea, or mostly have one or the other.

People with diarrhea will have frequent, loose, watery stools. They will often have an urgent need to have a bowel movement, which may be hard to control. Those with constipation will have a hard time passing stools, as well as fewer bowel movements. They will often need to strain and will feel cramps with a bowel movement. Often, they do not release any stools, or only a small amount.

For some people, the symptoms may get worse for a few weeks or a month, and then decrease for a while. For other people, symptoms are present most of the time. Here at Harmony Chinese Medical Centre we will focus very closely within the body's physical structure as well as the internal organs.
